Creativity is a natural form of expression amongst toddlers and young children. Nurturing creativity is important to make them open-minded and expressive. We, as adults, often remember our childhood creative experiences. These experiences enable a child to think and learn freely.
It starts with exploration. Exploration is best done with a team- peers or friends. Kids imagine wonderful things, take time through their discoveries and experience their creation. Unlike adults, they arrive slowly at the outcome or finished product. The whole process builds their interest and excitement. It is not akin to talent, proficiency or intelligence. Creativity must be an integral part of everyday learning too. The textbook-notebook learning is so passé in present context. Creativity and imagination fuel each other and run parallel in child’s learning process.
Early introduction to Creativity
Creativity lies in a scientist’s invention, in an archaeologist’s discovery, in a teacher’s talent to teach in fun way. So far, schools adopted few extra-curriculums in their academic years to unleash creativity and reduce stress levels amongst children. Learning music, dance, drama, painting, sketching, singing are creative initiatives taken by school apart from mainstream academics.
It is interesting to learn that coding or computer programming also hones natural creative instincts and the sooner they start, better is the result. Computer programming encourages whole brain thinking and problem-solving. Children have a different approach towards every obstacle and problem. Coding has aroused deep interest amongst children of this generation. It also promotes diversified imagination and interest.
Whole Brain Thinking
The brain is an amazing organ of human body. When it comes to thinking and memorising, left and right hemispheres of the brain are associated with different things. Left hemisphere is usually linked with logical and analytical thinking processes, and right hemisphere is linked to imaginative, spontaneous, and artistic thinking process. But most creative people can use their whole brain to think effectively rather than just the right part. The fundamental whole brain thinking can be achieved in schools by enabling interactive self-motivated learning where teachers are facilitators rather than dictators. This can be rightfully done by incorporating coding in school curriculums. It is project-based involving data analysing and compilation, designing and building. Children see the results in front of them instantly. It is gripping and to sum it up, it all is so much fun.
At the helm of affairs
Children are super confident when they know they can use technology to some advantage. It gives them immense pleasure to design and create things. Coding develops logical thinking and effective complex problem-solving. These objectives are rarely achieved through boxed-classroom learning. Online learning environments are free-flowing spaces. Children can use technology and devices easily and effectively to learn while coding. Exploration, experimentation and curiosity is fuelled in interactive learning subjects like computer programming, which is good for whole brain thinking.
